Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about the R.J. Hampson Shop

  • Yes! Each and every illustration is hand-drawn in a sketchbook, before being scanned and turned into a PDF for you to download, print and enjoy!

  • Each page should make everyone feel welcome! There are hidden details for you to find but every page should feel approachable.

  • I was being asked to film some example color alongs on You Tube. But I don't presume all colorists have all 25+ books! So each month I make sure there is a PDF pack available with the illustrations I plan to color. You can join my color alongs here: @rjhampson

  • You can see colored examples on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, or use the hashtag #rjhampson or join the 1000+ other colorists in the Facebook Group to share your creations, receive tips and chat with other colorists.

  • I release new books and packs every year on different themes - dragons & fantasy, steampunk, Mr Fogherty. So if you'd like to stay in the loop, sign up to the newsletter (you also receive a free illustration to color each month!)

What is the Best Paper to use for...

  • For markers, especially alcohol-based ones like Copics or Sharpies, you want paper that’s smooth, thick (at least 80 lb or 120 gsm), and resistant to bleeding. Marker paper, like Canson XL Marker Paper or Strathmore Marker Paper, is ideal because it’s designed to handle ink saturation without feathering or bleeding through. These papers often have a coated surface to keep colors vibrant and prevent soaking.

  • These require paper that can handle both dry and wet applications. A mixed-media paper or watercolor paper works best. Look for something with a bit of texture (cold-press for more tooth, hot-press for smoother) and a weight of at least 90 lb (190 gsm). Strathmore 400 Series Watercolor Paper or Canson XL Watercolor Paper are solid choices, as they can take water activation without warping too much.

  • Colored pencils shine on paper with some tooth to grip the pigment but smooth enough for layering. Bristol board is uncoated (Strathmore 300 Series Bristol Smooth) or Bristol Vellum that is slightly textured so you can build color depth and have grip for heavier pencil work. A heavy-weight drawing paper (around 80-100 lb or 120-160 gsm) like Canson Mi-Teintes is great. For detailed work, a smoother surface like hot-press watercolor paper or Stonehenge paper can enhance blending and burnishing.

  • If you’re mixing all three media, a mixed-media paper like Strathmore 400 Series Mixed Media (90 lb, 190 gsm) or Canson XL Mixed Media is versatile. It’s thick enough for light watercolor work, smooth enough for colored pencils, and bleed-resistant for markers.

  • No single “preferred” paper exists since it depends on your technique and budget, but I’d lean toward Strathmore or Canson for their consistent quality across these media. If you’re unsure, test a small mixed-media pad first. I often find papers around the studio and try them out just for fun.
